Last year there was a request to form a new chapter by a group in the Solivita Communinty in Kissimmee.

Melanie Simon has been working with them and they will be meeting this Friday to elect Officers and sign bylaws. We have a few Minutes slotted on the Agenda to discuss the status and if there are questions.

[Conservation Committee Report]

The Conservation Committee held a regular meeting on January 23rd. Notes are attached. We discussed the proposed LMR subcommittee charter and recommend modified language to adopt the change. Conservation Grant and the Dan Austin Ethnobotany Grants are due on March 1st. There have been a few inquiries - many applicants are not aware of the required details (i.e. they don't read the application before contacting us). A plant rescue PowerPoint has been edited and reviewed and is near completion for release.

John attended an on-site meeting with Putnam Land Conservancy staff (Willie and Kai) and US Fish & Wildlife funding coordinator (Chad Allison) - plus Lynda and Athena of FNPS. We toured the FNPS property and also nearby PLC properties that need similar restoration work for Clasping Warea and sand skink conservation. The Warea was present at several sites and on the edges of our FNPS site. There may be some possibilities for collaboration between PLC and local FNPS chapters to do more frequent work on some of these small properties and enhance the survival and expansion of the desired plant community.

The Conservation Committee proposes to add a Land Management Review (LMR) subcommittee to its charter with an addition to this BOD meeting or the meeting in March. When this was discussed as an agenda item in December, the motion failed following objection a provision specifying local chapter members would have priority in LMR review. The discussion centered on getting qualified and experienced members as primary reviewers. This charter amendment places responsibility of selection of primary LMR reviews - (and potential observer positions) on the designated staff person. This is new to the LMR process because reliance on volunteer FNPS members to act as contact points for DEP and scheduling LMR review participation and follow-up has not been functioning as it should for this important program. The Conservation Committee has input to the staff person and can see the planned reviewers and results. There should be a strong understanding that it is important to build local/regional competency and experience in this process. This can strengthen alliances between FNPS and local/regional land managers that are charged with oversight of important resources.

I noticed on the draft Charter that it says: "Land Management Program Subcommittee (LMR)". If you didn't mean to change it, the original committee was Land Management Partners (not Program). Either way, I'd suggest a consistency with the abbreviation. Either LMP or change the subcommittee to Land Management Review Subcommittee.

[Volunteer Hours Report - February]

Attached is a report of the hours reported so far for 2024.  Coordinators generally report January hours by mid-February, and since I compiled the report a little earlier than usual due to the timing of the Board meeting, some Chapters have not yet entered their 2024 hours.

There are a few 2023 hours (volunteered prior to 12/31/23) that were entered on the 2024 form and I have received emails with a few thousand 2023 hours that were not reported prior to the deadline.  At this point I do not intend to revise the 2023 report.
