FNPS Science Advisory Committee Report
September 14, 2007
Paul A. Schmalzer, Ph.D.

1. The Science Track of the 2007 Annual Conference consisted of 13 presented oral papers and 6 presented posters. Fourteen presented papers were scheduled, but one paper was cancelled due to the illness of the author. All papers and posters were submitted in response to the Call for Papers and Posters.

2. The Science Advisory Committee met at the Annual Conference. The Committee Chair Paul Schmalzer, Carl Weekley, and David Martin were present. There was general approval of the revised format of the Science Track at the Annual Conference, i.e., shorter papers, open call for papers, and poster session.

3. Fourteen proposals were received for the Endowment Research Awards. The review committee for the 2007 awards was Paul Schmalzer, Chair, Richard Wunderlin, Daphne Lambright, and Carl Weekley. The review committee recommended three proposals for awards, and all were approved by the FNPS Board of Directors. Those receiving awards were:

Jennifer Schafer, University of Florida “Effects of time since fire on nutrient limitation of plant productivity in Florida scrub ecosystems: Does disturbance shift nitrogen vs. phosphorus limitation? $2500.00

Dr. John Pascarella, Valdosta State University, and Dr. Joyce Maschinski, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden “Population structure and dynamics of restored and natural populations of the federally endangered Florida endemic Jacquemontia reclinata (Convolvulaceae). $1000.00

Alan Frank, University of South Florida “Conservaion genetics of three endangered Florida endemic Harrisia cacti”. $2000.00

The 2007 Awards are posted on the FNPS web site and were announced in the Sabal minor.

4. The Announcement of the 2008 Endowment Research Awards was developed and reviewed by the Executive Director. It was submitted for publication in the next available issue of The Palmetto and also the next available issue of the Sabal minor. It has been submitted to the FNPS Webmaster for posting on the web site.  It will be distributed by email by late September or early October. The deadline for applications will be March 7, 2008.

5. The Call for Scientific Papers and Posters for the 2008 Annual Conference was developed and reviewed by the Executive Director. It was submitted for publication in the next available issue of The Palmetto and also the next available issue of the Sabal minor. It has been submitted to the FNPS Webmaster for posting on the web site. It will be distributed by email by late September or early October. The deadline for applications will be February 1, 2008
 
6. I reviewed several articles for future issues of The Palmetto.
