OLD BUSINESS
(this was at initiated at the BOD meeting)
4. Resolution to join the Florida Everglades Coalition – Joan Bausch
Motion is to approve the following Resolution:
Whereas, in the year 2000, Congress launched the 30-year, highly technical and complex process of restoring America’s Everglades by approving the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) and;
Whereas, the State of Florida signed onto this historic initiative as an equal partner and;
Whereas, The Everglades Coalition was organized in 1968 to fight for Everglades National Park water rights, to place the ecosystem's Big Cypress watershed under the National Park System protection and to work for protection of natural values in the entire Everglades ecosystem, from the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Keys and coral reefs and;
Whereas, The Everglades Coalition is an alliance of local, state and national conservation and environmental organizations working together in respect and unity to protect, preserve and restore the Everglades Ecosystem and dedicated to the full restoration of the greater Everglades ecosystem, from the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes into Lake Okeechobee, through the "River of Grass", out to Florida Bay and the Keys and;
Whereas, The Everglades Coalition is dedicated to accomplishing what Congress intended when the CERP was approved to achieve ecological restoration and programmatic regulations are being improved to provide adequate assurances of achieving restoration in planning, developing and implementing CERP and;
Whereas The Everglades Coalition is an advocate for the restoration, protection and enhancement of the greater Everglades ecosystem and;
Whereas The Everglades Coalition works in the public arena to inform decision makers on the collective view of the conservation community regarding the greater Everglades ecosystem based on sound science on critical aspects of restoration,
Now therefore be it resolved that the Florida Native Plant Society does fully endorse The Everglades Coalition and their 2010 Vision Plan of Restoration.
