Hi,

I'm actually in SE Georgia.
I have a couple of areas that I want to plant with some sort of ground cover and I thought Gopher Apples (Lycania michauxii) would fit the area and provide a food source since there is a group of Gopher Tortoises that live real close to the area I want to plant..

I have been looking for a source for Gopher Apples for quite a while with no luck. Does anyone know where I can find Gopher Apples?

Thanks
Dave

It's been a few weeks now with no replies so I'm assuming nobody has any idea where I can find Gopher Apple seeds or plants?

Dave...I got gopher apples from a native nursery in Hudson, called Environmental Equities.  I had them when I lived in suburban Tampa, but haven't tried to find them where I live now.  You can do a search at the Association of Florida Native Nurseries website
http://www.afnn.org/search_afnn.asp?n=22  and see if they or any of the four other companies located in Florida would ship them to you.  Ironically, I have gopher tortoises where I live now but no gopher apples.  In Brandon, I had the plants but marsh rabbits ate the fruit!

Hope you check back and get this message.  This board isn't very active.  I used to have lively discussions when I subscribed to AOL on their regional garden boards.  I was among a handful of gardeners advocating native plants.  One of the other advocates also is very active in her chapter of FNPS.  She sometimes posts here as well.

Hi Dave, Haven't been looking here for awhile. Hope you followed Trudy's advice. AFNN should be helpful.

I bought several plants at FNPS Conference from Dave Chiappini nursery (I think). They were nice size and good-looking.

A friend gave me seed last fall but I neglected to get them into the ground... was it Wilma that distracted me? at any rate I don't know if they are still viable. wont be able to attend to them till fall. Maybe she will give me new seed???

Good luck with your hunt. Gopher apple is a wonderful choice for appropriate areas.
